MUSKEGON – Scoring hasn’t been a problem for Muskegon this season, but improvement on the defensive end was the goal for Saturday’s MASL 3 Great Lakes North Division matchup with Kalamazoo United.

“We always score goals. Our main goal tonight was to keep them under 5 goals, that was the gameplan,” said Risers’ leading scorer Elmedin Zukic. “Our plan was to keep them under 5 and that worked perfect. We have a lot of work to do to get to where we want to be – a championship team – but I’m happy. Most important (for our defense) was to get back and to not get too excited, which can happen to a young team. We had more patience, organization and communication tonight for us to play better.”

Zukic bagged his second hat trick of the season as the Risers rolled past Kalamazoo 12-4 to remain undefeated on the season. Miguel Flores and Abraham Arellano both finished the night with two goals and an assist, while Pablo Real and Brett Timmer each had two goals. Goalie Travis Schmid earned the win after making 9 saves over the first three quarters before giving way to Michael Vollmer in the fourth. Jair Real ended the night with three assists for Muskegon, who returns to action on Feb. 14 against Kalamazoo United after next Saturday’s forfeit win over Indiana United.
